Every mature industry eventually settles on a small number of platforms that become the default infrastructure everyone builds on. Software engineering has its version control and deployment platforms. Sales has its CRM. Design has its collaborative editing tools. Legal practice in India has not yet had this moment — but the conditions for it are starting to line up.

The phrase "operating system" is sometimes used loosely in software marketing, so it's worth being precise about what it actually means here. An operating system is not a single feature or a single tool. It is the layer underneath everything else — the place where the fundamental units of work live, so that everything built on top of it can assume that foundation exists. For an operating system, the question is not "what does it do," but "what does it organize."

For legal practice, that foundational unit is the matter — and around it, the institutional knowledge, the team, and the documents that accumulate over its life. A genuine legal operating system treats these as connected, persistent objects rather than files scattered across separate, disconnected tools. Once that foundation exists, the things built on top of it — research assistance, drafting support, reporting, client communication — become dramatically more useful, because they are operating with full context rather than reconstructing it each time.

We think this shift is coming to Indian legal practice over the next several years, the same way it has already happened in other professional fields. Firms that adopt a real foundation early will spend the next decade building fluency and institutional knowledge inside a system designed to retain it. Firms that wait will spend that same decade migrating data out of disconnected tools, one piecemeal project at a time.
